Clinical Nurse Leader (Behavioral Health)

Location: Biloxi, Mississippi

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Leading and organizing delivery of care to assure continuity of care and peer accountability for practice, including access to care a nd discharge planning.
  • Using advanced clinical knowledge/judgment to promote staff involvement in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcome.
  • Functioning as an expert in clinical practice and/or areas related to the assigned roles and responsibilities.
  • Systematically evaluating current practice, and formulating outcomes for groups of patients and/or organizational processes within an area of expertise.
  • Guiding, developing, and supporting staff from a leadership perspective,
  • Using professional standards of care, scientific evidence, and practice to evaluate programs and/or service activities.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 AM - 4:30 PM

Basic Requirements:
  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Education: Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6). OR In cases of gradua tes of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing.
  • Licensure: Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia.
  • Physical Standards: Registered Nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must undergo a pre-employment physical as required by VA policies and procedures.
  • English Language Proficiency: Registered Nurses appointed to direct patient care positions must be proficient in both spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Clinical Nurse Leader Requirements: Must possess a Master's degree from a Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) accredited Clinical Nurse Leader program of study and maintain a full and current national board certification as a Clinical Nurse Leader by the Commission on Nurse Certification (CNC).

BLS Requirement: Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required for all staff providing direct patient care. Certification is required from an American Heart Association (AHA) or Military Training Network (MTN) approved course. This certification is a condition of employment. Certification should be considered in a similar manner as licensure is considered for a clinical professional. Staff should not let certification expire.

Preferred Experience: In addition to the basic qualification requirements, applicants must have demonstrated evidence of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities determined to be essential for satisfactory performance in the position.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful nursing experience. Mental Health experience preferred
  • Indiv idual able to provide written example of his/her characteristic of effective collaboration with teams to improve the quality of patient care outcomes.
  • Leadership ability as demonstrated by previous performance to lead healthcare team to effectively demonstrate and sustain positive patient care outcomes.
  • Proven excellent interpersonal relationship skills able to articulate and his/her effective communication with all levels of staff subordinates and leadership.Demonstration of collaborative approaches to patient care with the interdisciplinary team, and effective communication skills.Demonstrated ability to manage and lead in a patient centered care-focused environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve as a primary leader/initiator for a changing program with flexibility and creativeness.Track record is excellence in planning, implementing and evaluating patient care programs.Demonstrated ability to implement and evaluate quality management programs to improve patient care needs.
  • Demonstrated ability in working knowledge of Joint Commission Standards, the specific care requirements of the patient within the acute hospital setting and behavioral health.
  • The ability to analyze data to assist healthcare team. Possess the ability to develop and manage unit projects to improve the quality of patient outcomes. Displays the ability to use evidence-based practice to assist the health care team to improve patient outcome.
  • Demonstrated consistent meeting time-lines.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade:
  • Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience.
  • Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required.
  • Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 year's of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree.

Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing stooping, sitting, bending pulling and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. Mechanical inpatient lifts are provided. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and co ntaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in insolation situations, operative/invasive procedures, or home settings. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable to working effectively in effectively situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. The incumbent who provides care in home settings or other off-site locations may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicles.
