Technician provides direct patient care under the supervision of the
charge nurse. Responsibilities include the provision of a safe
a! nd therapeutic milieu, crisis intervention and assistance with
activities of daily living.

the criteria listed in this job description. The specifications
listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and ability
to meet the minimum requirements for this position. Staff must
demonstrate flexibility for reassignment to units providing care to
varied populations including male and female children, adolescents
and adults as well as dually diagnosed adults.
Education: Bachelor degree in health or human services preferred
or
Experience: High school diploma with one year prior
psychiatric/social service experience preferred.
Licensure/Certification: Not applicable.
Knowledge: Knowledge of human behavior or principles of psychology
preferred incl! uding therapeutic relationships and processes, age
specifi! c growth and development, limit setting and crisis and
behavior management.
Supervision Received: Charge Nurse, Nurse Supervisor and Director of Nursing
Services
Supervision Exercised: Not applicable.
In absence of these qualifications upon hire, must
demonstrate ability to learn these concepts and develop these skills
within reasonable time frame via the organization’s orientation
and training program.
Environmental Conditions:
Exposure to psychiatric patients who may exhibit
violent/aggressive behavior. Potential for exposure to
communicable diseases, blood/body fluids and other hazardous
waste. General hospital environment.
Loss Control Safety Standards:
Staff must adhere to all safety policies and safe work
practices. Attendance of hospital safety trainings is
required. Staff must adhere to all hospital policies and
procedures and report all acc! idents immediately to a
supervisor.
Physical and Mental Requirements:
Must be able to exercise self-control in potentially
volatile situations such as being verbally or physically confronted
in a threatening or aggressive manner. Must be able to work and
concentrate amidst distractions such as noise, conversation and foot
traffic. Must be flexible and not easily frustrated in dealing
with differences of opinion.
Must be able to stoop, kneel, crouch, reach, stand for
sustained period of time, walk, pull, lift objects from a lower to
higher position or horizontally from position to position, finger
grasp; feel sizes, shapes, temperatures and textures; express or
exchange ideas orally, accurately and quickly; perform repetitive
motions of the wrist, hands or fingers. Light work most of the
time, exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10
pounds of force frequently; and occasionally! medium work, that is
exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasional! ly, and/or up to 20
pounds of force frequently. Work requires a minimum standard of
visual acuity with or without correction that will enable the
employee to complete administrative and clerical tasks and visually
observe patients on the unit and in therapeutic
activities.
Visual Acuity: Machine Operators (including
inspection), Inspection, Close Assembly, Clerical,
Administrative:
This is a minimum standard for use with those whose work
deals largely with preparing and analyzing data and figures,
accounting, transcription, computer terminal, excessive reading,
visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, operation of
machines (including inspection), using measuring devices, assembly or
fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.
Level of Reading and Writing Required for
Job:
High School level reading and writing skills.
Machines, Tools a! nd Equipment Used on
Job:
Computer and Printer, Blood Pressure Cuff, Facsimile,
Copier, Telephones, Digital Thermometer, EKG, Various Office
Supplies (pens, pencils, markers, tape dispensers, rolodex machines,
addressograph, staplers, etc.)
Job Classification:
Non-Exempt; Hours vary based on staffing needs and include
day, evening, night and weekend shifts.
