(Specialty Care Transport-RN)
Reports To: SCT Coordinator directly, Operations Manager Indire! ctly. If there is not an SCT Coordinator, the SCT RNs shall be supervised directly by the Operations Manager.

POSITION SUMMARY:
The fundamental responsibility of the SCT-RN is to conserve life, to alleviate suffering, to promote health, to do no harm and to encourage the quality and equal availability of emergency medical care. The SCT-RN is qualified in advanced critical care transport and services by a competency based educational program of clinical, didactic, and hospital based critical care experience. The SCT-RN provides out-of-hospital EMS when the level of care required exceeds that of other EMS caregivers but is within the scope of practice for specially trained RNs. The standard of practice of the SCT-RN shall be in accordance with the applicable states’ Nurse Practice Act, Board of Nursing, and the operational standards of AMR.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities -
Conducts a ! careful examination of the patient for signs and symptoms of illness/injury and provides quality patient care utilizing thorough knowledge and appropriate administration of Critical Care Nursing Skills and the AMR Operating Unit’s SCT Protocols and Standing Orders.
Provides careful handling of the patient in moving him to the ambulance vehicle.
Provides safe and efficient transport of the patient while constantly monitoring the patient and providing any appropriate continuing care.
Provides orderly transfer of the patient at destination.
Upon arrival at destination with patient, responsible for preparing all ALS supplies and equipment to place the unit back in service.
- Obtains and records information for the specialty care transport from the communications center, communicates with appropriate hospital services as needed during the ambulance run (proceeding to the sending facility, at the sending facility, and proceeding to the receiving ! facility, and alerting hospital staff of the arrival of the patient(s). The SCT-RN must follow FCC regulations relative to the use of communications equipment.
Responsible for full knowledge of vehicle’s medical equipment and its proper use at all times.
In accordance with his assigned duty as crew member, makes daily checks of the vehicle equipment and systems, and completes manifests.
Reports and relays needed unit and bio-medical equipment repairs to the SCT Coordinator, Field Operations Supervisor and support services personnel as soon as possible after becoming aware of need.
Responsible for maintaining respective state and national certification(s).
Responsible for prec! epting new employees as directed.
Responsible for manifesting and c! are of assigned kits and knowledge of contents and application thereof.
Administers advanced inter-facility care within the limits of licensure or certification and in accordance with approved protocols;
Attends mandatory ALS review meetings, SCT meetings, and other required company meetings as scheduled.
Does not use professional knowledge and skills in any enterprise detrimental to the company or to the public well being.
Respects and holds in confidence all information of a confidential nature obtained in the course of professional work unless required by law to divulge such information.
Maintains professional competence and demonstrates concern for the competence of other members of the EMS health care team.
Responsible for upholding standards of practice and education.
Adheres to standards of personal ethics, on and off duty, which reflect credit upon the profession.
Protects the public by not delegating to persons less qualified, any se! rvice which requires the professional competence of an RN.
Assists in QI functions as needed by QA/QI Specialist with primary responsibility to Specialty Care Transport Units.
Refuses to participate in unethical procedures, and assumes the responsibility to expose incompetence or unethical conduct of others to the appropriate authority in a proper and professional manner.
Assists in public relations functions as required by the Operations Manager.
Assists other departments as State regulations permit.
Non-Essential Duties and Responsibilities-

Physical Requirements- (Field Employees Only)
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move 10 pounds up to 50 pounds.
- Due to the unpredictability of the essential job functions, it is not always possible to guarantee break and/or meal period. Must have the ability to work twelve (12) hours without a meal or break period (except for re! stroom breaks).
Full time! employees must be available for recall in times of crisis.
Must be at least 21 years old.
- Must live within 30 minutes normal highway driving time of AMR Operating Unit.
Due to the uncontrolled environment in which the SCT-RN works, he/she may be subjected to predisposing themselves to be at risk for:
bodily harm
o exposure to blood borne pathogens and other potentially infectious materials (OPIM).
Education/Licensing/Certification:
Must be currently licensed as a registered nurse in state(s) where SCT services are to be provided.
Must possess a current State driver’s license for the State in which the operating unit is based except where exempt by State regulation.
Currently licensed as ACLS provider.
Current BCLS certification from AHA.
Current PALS certification from AHA.
! Current certification in advanced trauma care preferred. If not already certified, must obtain certification in BTLS, PHTLS, TNCC or AMR-approved equivalent within 6 months of hire.
Current certification in advanced pediatric care preferred. If not already certified, must obtain certification (approved by AMR) within 6 months of hire date.
Experience:
- Must have a minimum of one (1) year of experience in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) setting. Must have worked in this setting no longer than one year previous to hire date
- Critical patient inter-facility transfer experience preferred.
RNs practicing in the pre-hospital environment are held accountable to a standard of care that is commensurate with their knowledge, education, experience and licensure. It is incumbent upon nurses to recognize their individual learning needs and to obtain the necessary knowledge and skills required for nu! rsing practice in the pre-hospital environment or to refrain from such ! practice.
Skillful in thinking and acting quickly in stressful situations.
Able to function around seriously ill or injured people in a responsible manner.
Able to maintain harmonious relationships with fellow crewmembers, public safety personnel, and the general public under stressful situations.
Good knowledge of common physical illnesses, obvious symptoms and appropriate medical terminology.
Skillful in the application of basic and critical care nursing procedures and in the use of all equipment maintained on ambulances and the SCT unit.
Has full knowledge of rules of the road for emergency and non-emergency situations.
Conducts herself/himself in a professional manner while on duty and avoids inappropriate conduct, on and off duty, which may adversely affect the reputation of AMR.
Able to express self effectively to both medical and lay personnel orally and written in the English language.
Skilled in the use of EMS radio equipment and! cellular phones.
Knows and abides by FCC rules and regulations.
Reflects the standards of professionalism in appearance with neatness and cleanliness.
Has a good working knowledge of all company policies pertaining to this position.
